Aromas sold by The Aroma Company are manufactured and used according to the guidelines set down by the International Fragrance Association (IFRA).
IFRA is concerned with all aspects of health and safety evaluation of the fragrance industry. In the absence of specific regulations for fragrances, the IFRA 'code of practice' is a system of "self regulatory control of the safe usage of perfume ingredients with particular reference to certain materials considered to have a potential for undesirable effects".
These guidelines are based on work carried out by the Research Institute for Fragrance Materials (RIFM), a non profit making organisation with the sole purpose of establishing fragrance safety. The RIFM research panel consists of international experts in the fields of toxicology, pharmacology and dermatology.
In the UK the British Fragrance Association (BFA) maintains a list of member companies which adhere to the standards. The BFA technical committee look in detail at such topics as health & safety matters, COSHH Regulations, CHIP, EINECS/ECOIN and the EC Cosmetics Directive. Together with the British Essence Manufacturers Association (BEMA) advice is also given on the Consumer Protection Act 1988.
